Using AI to Design a Book Cover - Worksheet

You have studied different perspectives on Mount Rushmore. Now it is your turn to decide how this story should be represented.
You are going to use an Artificial Intelligence app to design the cover of a book titled The Whole Truth About Mount Rushmore, but you are in charge of deciding what you want the app to do. 

1. Taking a critical look at AI productions.
a. Here is an example of a cover created by an AI app with the following prompt: "Can I have a suggestion for the cover of a book titled 'The Whole Truth About Mount Rushmore'?"
Explain what you think about it. What does it show? What do you think is missing? Does it give an accurate illustration of the documents you have studied so far?

2. Drafting a project.
First, write a project describing the ideas and concepts you think should be represented on the cover. You may want to review your "Personal Recap Chart" and take a look at the documents you have studied so far. 
You can also use the following guidelines to write your project:
a. What message(s) or feeling(s) do I want the cover to convey? 
b. What visual style or mood am I going to choose?
c. What should the cover represent: objects, people, landscapes, symbols, etc.? 
d. What composition am I going to create? What elements should be in the background/foreground, or in the center?
Be sure to:

• Use your "Personal Recap Chart" to refer to ideas or discussions from class as well as vocabulary or expressions.
• Show that you understood the multiple perspectives.

3. Giving efficient instructions.
Artificial Intelligence is only as good as the instructions it receives. You can ask a question or several questions or provide a set of instructions or prompts. The better the prompts, the better the result. 
Here are a few tips to create a good prompt:

• Provide context.
• Be environmentally-aware: AI apps with their huge data centers are large consumers of water. They also use a lot of rare minerals and massive amounts of electricity which still comes, for the most part, from fossil fuels. Remember: do not use AI for things you can easily Google so do not use AI for simple questions; use AI tools from companies which promote responsible AI use; educate your friends and family by telling them about the environmental effects of AI.
• Be specific in your instructions from the start since the more successive instructions you give the more energy the app will use. 

4. Now, present your cover to a partner and explain what you want to say or show. He or she will react. Then you will swap roles. 

5. Follow-up work.
Now, use all the ideas you found for Activity 1 to write the back cover blurb of the book.
